How do I Create a Custom Map?

Getting Started

To create a custom map go to our website www.mytopo.com and click on FIND A MAP.

STEP 1:

Enter your search location (or browse stock maps) using any of the following criteria:
  • Search for a Place or Address
  • USGS Quad Sheets by State - we provide the option to order the new US Topo or the Classic USGS quad
  • GMU, Hunting Area, or WMA/State Park Map
  • Backpacker Magazine Pro Map
  • Lake Map
Use the Address/Placename search to locate the area of interest, pan/zoom the map as needed, then click Maps Available Here for a list of options available at that location. Choose either a stock map, quad sheet, or a custom map.

Or, use the Digital Mapping and Additional Options to:
  • Search by GPS Coordinate
  • Upload a GPX File
  • Explore our premier digital mapping solution: Terrain Navigator Pro

STEP 2:

Build your (custom) map
If you have elected to build a custom map...

1. Select a Base Map type:
  • USGS Topographic Map
  • Color Aerial Photo
  • Premium Satellite Photo
  • Hybrid TopoPhoto
Not all base map types are available at all scales; if the map preview is blank, try a different scale. Some map types are not available in Canada.
Note the statistics in the upper left of the preview window - which reflect the price, scale, date, etc. of your current selections.

2. Add Premium Overlays:
Note: Not all layers are available in all locations.
  • Private Property Boundaries
  • Public Land Boundaries
  • US Forest Service Roads and Trials
  • GMU Boundaries
  • Lake Contours
These premium map overlays are offered at an additional cost - the Map Price will be updated accordingly.

3. Choose Map Area
  a. Paper Size
  • 18" x 24"
  • 24" x 36"
  • 36" x 48"
  • 4' x 5' (uses banner paper)
  • 5' x 8' (uses banner paper)
The Map Price and red map edge box will update as different paper sizes are selected.

  b. Orientation
  • Wide (landscape)  or  Tall (portrait)
The red map edge box will update to reflect the selected orientation.

  c. Map Zoom
  • We offer nine zoom levels.
  • For topo maps, the most you can zoom into is 1:10,000.
  • For aerials, the most you can zoom into is 1:2,500.
  • For satellite maps, the most you can zoom into is 1:1000.
We do not recommend zooming out to 1:50,000 unless you are doing so to use with a protractor/grid tool of that scale.  The topo map print gets very small and hard to read when zoomed out to 1:50,000.

4. View a Full Map Preview
Click Preview Now>> to open a window showing exactly how your map will appear. Click on the window to enlarge it and inspect for any blemishes or inaccuracies.

STEP 3:

Choose your map finish (paper type)

1. Waterproof "Outdoor" Map
MyTopo waterproof maps are printed with UV fade-resistant and waterproof inks on a special waterproof and tear-resistant paper. Waterproof maps are available rolled or folded for rugged outdoor use.

2. Laminated Map
Full-seam laminated map printed with UV fade-resistant inks. The lamination protects the map from water and dirt and is writable/erasable with standard dry-erase markers. Available rolled only.

STEP 4:

Personalize your map
  • Add a name, title, select navigational grids (or no grids), relief shading or no shading etc...

STEP 5:
